Organic Herb Gardening -- Tips for Success

Herbs are perhaps the most multipurpose plants on Earth. Herbs are plants that are grown for their culinary, medicinal and cosmetic use. Many herbs are processed into essential oils which are fragrant and therapeutic. Because herbs are used in practical ways, organic herb gardening is infinitely preferable to non-organic herb gardening. Organic gardening is a method of agriculture which does not use toxic or dangerous chemicals as pesticides or fertilizers. Everything used is natural and safe. Speaking of safety, you should know that non-organic pesticides and fertilizers can be very toxic.

When you use herbs that have been sprayed with toxic chemicals, you are getting traces of those toxic chemicals in your food, tea or other product. When you use lotion that contains non-organic herbs it is like rubbing pesticide on your body. This is why it is so important to go organic. There are plenty of ways to nourish the soil and fight harmful pests without resorting to dangerous toxins. One fantastic form of fertilizer is compost. Compost is made from decaying plant matter and is excellent for creating optimum growing conditions. Another natural and effective fertilizer is livestock manure. You can buy pre-bagged manure for your garden that is easy to use.

Because of the growing popularity of organic gardening, there are many products on the market designed for this very purpose. You will not only find fertilizers but pesticides as well. You can make your own pesticide by combining pungent herbs with white vinegar and spraying the mixture on your plants. A good mixture would be garlic, red pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper and mint. These pungent and spicy herbs and spices are very discouraging to garden pests. Another way to keep pests away is to export ladybugs. These adorable insects are aphid-killing machines and are very good for your herb garden.

If you are new to the world of organic herb gardening, you may want to do some research and check out some books on this subject. There are many titles devoted to growing herbs organically. Here are a few suggestions: Burpee : The Complete Vegetable & Herb Gardener : A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically by Karan Davis Cutler, Your Backyard Herb Garden: A Gardener's Guide to Growing Over 50 Herbs Plus How to Use Them in Cooking, Crafts, Companion Planting and More by Miranda Smith and Herbs: Organic Gardening Basics by the Editors of Organic Gardening Magazine.
